Focus: The influence of media on the spiritual life of the Salesians.
Target group: 30 Salesians in Divyadaan and 10 Salesians in Tamil Nadu and 15 Salesian sisters in Nashik.

1.   What media do you use in your Salesian life?




                This Pie Chart explains about the various social media that Salesians use in their day today life. The percentages are out of 100.  14% of Salesians watch Television. 14% of Salesians have Face book account. 12% of Salesians send and receive Mails through internet. 7% of Salesian use You tube and read Newspapers. 5% of Salesians read books and 4% of Salesians read Magazines. 3% of Salesians tweet, use Skype, have mobile and listen to radio. 2% of Salesians use Flip kart, Amazon and use Whats app. 1% of Salesians use Camera, Blogger and Instagram. Some Salesians use IMO, Viber, Hootsuite and Pinterest.

2.   How much time do you spend in using the media?




This Pie Chart explains about the amount of time that Salesians spend in using the various social media. The percentages are out of 100.  15% of Salesians spend one hour and more. 13% of Salesians spend two hours and more. 7% of Salesians spend half an hour every day. 6% of Salesians spend half a day.6% of Salesians use media depend on their need.  Some of the Salesians spend almost whole day. 4% of Salesians don’t access internet. 49% of Salesians access internet only some days.  13% of Salesians spend two hours and more. 13% of Salesians spend two hours and more. Most of the Salesians use print media daily. But, regarding mobile and internet majority of them use only some days. For some it depends upon the mission.


3.   In what way does media affect on your spiritual life?





This Pie Chart explains about the various ways in which social media affects the Salesian spiritual life both positively and negatively. The percentages are out of 100. For 36% of Salesians media is useful to listen and download hymns. For 22% of Salesians media helps in various liturgical animations. For 11% of Salesians it gives them daily reflections. For 7% of Salesians media affects their prayer life some time both positively and negatively. 6% of Salesians watch religious TV channels in their spiritual journey. 3% of Salesians get inspirational quotes and different kinds of spiritual methods which provide a boost for their religious life.  For 1% of Salesians it gives them news about the holy father and the church. It helps them to give guidance for others. Through media they come to know lot of things that are happening in and around the world. This information helps them to say a prayer for others who are in need.  


4.   What are the positive influences of media on spirituality?




This Pie Chart explains about the positive influences of media on spirituality in general. The percentages are out of 100.  For 35% of Salesians media paves a way to get to know about the different religions and the holiness they contain. For 28% of Salesians it is used to exchange their Salesian spirituality with others and also to know about the different kinds of spirituality. For 20% of Salesians media provides different types of prayers. For 10% of Salesians media supports one’s spiritual life in various ways in order to keep them alive. For 7% of Salesians opined that the media attracts the sinners or non believers and make them to realize the greatness of spiritual life and the religion.    


5.   What are the negative influences of media on spirituality?








This Pie Chart explains about the negative influences of media on spirituality in general. The percentages are out of 100.  For 58% of Salesians media provides wrong information’s about the different religions and the fruit of spiritual life. For 22% of Salesian say that media is being misused. For 17% of Salesians media can make the people to be addicted to it which would in turn spoil one’s spiritual life.  For 3% of Salesian mass media sometimes excuses the prayer life. In the name of using media for the spiritual growth sometimes one can even forget the end of the usage and get addicted only to the means that is media. 




Critical Evaluation

v Most of the Salesians are accessing media in their daily life. They use it for their mission and studies.

v Salesians consider mass media as a digital playground of   today’s young people. Salesian love what the young people love.


v By the influence of media they are able to render prayer helps for other and give spiritual guidance.

v In this third millennium by the rising of various kinds of media Salesians are trying to touch and shape the lives of lot of young people.

v Media can also be used wrongly and get addicted to it. Each one has to take responsibility in using media.
