Plot Analysis:
a) Main
story line:
The
story of the movie Oh my God (OMG) is about a middle class man namely Kanji
Bhai who tries to sustain himself and his family by running a God’s idol shop. In his family he has to take care of himself, his
wife, a daughter and a son. He is an atheist, while his family members are
theist. One day he has a quarrel with a Hindu priest and curses God. The very
day there is an earthquake which ruins his shop alone while other nearby shops
are not ruined. Everyone believes that it is because of his curse against God. The
insurance company refuses to pay him the compensation saying that the loss is
due to the act of God and so the company is not liable to pay him the
compensation. Since everyone says that the earthquake which ruined his shop is
caused by God, he wants to get compensate from God and files a case against
God. No advocate is ready to take up the case and fight for him; however he
decides to fight his own case by himself with the advice of a good advocate.
The people who face the same problem join with him to fight for their cause. Because
of this his wife takes his children and walk out of the house. At this juncture
God comes to Kanji and stays with him and helps him to proceed the case. Kanji
could Kanji argues well and questions the existence of God. On the last day of
the hearing in the court he falls sick and admitted in ICU (Intensive Care
Unit) lying paralyzed and in coma.
b) Climax:
For a
month he is in the ICU and paralyzed. One day God who was staying with him
comes and cures Kanji and reveals His true identity as God. Then God shows him
what had happened in the past one month during his time of coma. Kanji comes to
know that he had won the case and the compensation had been paid to all people
by the religious institutions that he had accused of running religion as money
making industry. He also realizes that priests against whom he was fighting have
planned to make him an avatar of Lord Vishnu and have decided
a death day for him. He escapes from the hospital with the help of God and goes
to the place of his ruined shop where the priests have erected his statue and
planned to build a temple for him. He breaks his statue and the donation box
that is kept for his temple. He then tells the people that God lives in every
human being. It is we who have made a religion and kept God in the temple. We
have to see God everywhere and in the heart of every human being. God present
everywhere is the crux of the movie.
c) Type
of Film:
Awareness & Educative
3. Technical Analysis:
The
technological works are done wonderfully well. The techniques used in the movie
are amazing. The cinematography is admirable. The entire team together with the
director Mr. Umesh Shukla has done an excellent job.
a) Camera:
The camera man
and director of photography have given their best. The emotion scenes are
captured well. Though the shorts are simple the angel view and close ups are
given prime importance.
b) Light
& Sound: The
lightings are sufficiently given. The brightness and darkness are balanced to
the situation and it is appreciable. The sounds are proportionate to the
actions.
c) Editing:
The editors Mr.
Tushar shivan and Mr. Rajesh Panchal’s works should be highly esteemed. The
editing’s gives colour the movie. Though there avail high technology today but
the editing technology is very simple and ample.
d) Costume
& Make up: The
costume and make up sector have done an excellent job by keeping the costume
and make up simple and best.
e) Acting:
Since the movie
is based on an ordinary people the characters are very simple. The actors
placed themselves on their role. The hero’s actions and feelings are merging
with the situation.
f) Music:
Mr. Himesh
Reshammiya the music composer has composed beautiful songs in accordance with
the situations. The background music creates a feeling in the heart of the
people and makes them feel one with the movie.
h) Graphics:
There are no
much graphics in this film. The thundering and lightning scenes have come out well.
The graphics for the earthquake and the rains are extremely made. Over all I
would say that the technically speaking this movie is sound and deserves my
appreciation.
4. Sociological Analysis:
a) Philosophy
behind: Today in
the name of religion big business is going on. God is being sold in the
religion by some gurus. The common people with the fear of dharma no one dares to question and analyse what all these about.
The fear of God overtakes the love of God. The one who critically analyses the
existence of God would know that God has to be encountered with love rather
than fear.
b) Problem
Portrayed: People
are offering lot of wealth and making many sacrifices for God. In spite of that
the sufferings and miseries are existing in the world.
c) Moral
of the Story: See
and experience God in all the beings that are in the world even in our fellow
human being.
d) Social
Implications: God
is present everywhere. Instead of wasting money on erecting a statue and
building a temple for Him this movies call for a charity toward our neighbour.
This movie invites each human being to respect, to help and to treat others as
equals.
5.
Education through the Film:
This
movie provides lot of educative values. As for my view the movie teaches the
following things.
a) Morality:
Promote peace
and harmony.
b) Social
Concern: Take
care of our fellow human beings and love and serve others.
c) Religion:
Religion is for
Man, Man is not for Religion. Religions are made by Man. This should be
understood properly. There shouldn’t be any fight in the name of Religion.
d) God:
God is a creator
and preserver not a destroyer.
e) Faith:
our faith has to
be analysed and come out of the blind faith in God.
6. Critical Evaluation:
a) What
is the Purpose of this film?
·
Primary
purpose of
the movie is to create awareness about our blind faith in God and to move
towards the better understanding of God.
·
Secondary
purpose of
the movie is commercial. This movie is a good example of how media and religion
could influence each other.
b) What
does the film communicate to the audience about God?
·
This
movie clarifies lots of ideas about God.
·
God
is not found only in the temple and in the idols but everywhere and in
everything and in everybody.
c) What
is the concept of God and Religion presented in the film?
·
Concept of God: God is a friend and a lover. He
is a creator and preserver.
·
Concept of Religion: The importance is given for
rituals than on God. In the religion God is being sold and encountered.
d) Why
the protagonist has an atheistic view of Reality?
·
The
proponents of the religions are uneducated.
·
As
a deities idol shop keeper the protagonist realized that the people believe any
stories if it pertains to God or religion. They never analyse.
e) What
implications do media and religion have for each other in this film?
·
Media:
It should bring out the blind practices of religion but at the same time it
should not criticize God.
·
Religion:
It is created by human being. So, it should not manipulate human being but
nurture human being.
