TRUST IN THE LORD

TRUST IN THE LORD

We are in the 24th Sunday in ordinary time. All the three readings of today speak about trusting in the Lord. In the first reading the man boasts about his deed i.e., he did not fight with his enemy. Nor did he feel bad about the way the enemy was treating him. Rather, he says that he trusted in the Lord that all these will change and the truth would come out one day. Now he is ready to confront the enemy because he has full trust in the Lord. He bore all the evil things with faith that his enemy had done to him.
In the second reading St. James tells the believers that their faith must be expressed in their deeds. The profession of faith becomes meaningful only when it is actualized. For this he speaks about helping the poor people materially. Apart from these we need to show our faith in whatever we do. Each activity that we do must be based on faith. If one endures suffering, s/he must face that with faith in the Lord that the Lord Jesus is the master of all the sufferings. This basic trust in the Lord will strengthen the faithful to overcome from whatever situation they are in.
Though the Gospel mainly projects about Jesus’ identity with the question of Jesus “who do people and you (disciples) say that I am?” The crux of the Gospel lies in the second part of the Gospel after peter’s affirmation about Jesus that he is the messiah. Peter acts like a man of little faith. He affirms that Jesus is the Lord. If Jesus is the Lord the passion and sufferings which He foretells them that He would undergo should not be a problem for their faith. If Jesus, the Lord chooses to suffer, He knows why He does that. Normal man would not chose to suffer. It is there that peter forgets to look at Jesus as the Lord and shows his lack of trust in divine plan.
On the whole the readings of today invites us to recheck our faith in the Lord. Most of time we forget the presence of the Lord in our life. We decide on certain things on our own without taking them into a prayer. At times we justify this act by saying that we need not to disturb God on small, small things. But, involving God in everything that we do express our faith in the Lord. The more we involve Him in our life, the more we trust Him. The more we trust Him, the more He comes close to us.
