The cry of
the people of Israel were heard by God of Abraham, God of Isaac and God of
Jacob. God who is I AM WHO AM sending Moses to release them from the cruelty of
Egyptians. It is to Moses that God revealed His name first and told how he
should be called by the people of Israel. In the history of the world only the
God of Israel has intervened the people’s liberation directly. How beautiful it
is to have a God who comes to our aid directly than offering lot of things to
God to please Him?
In the second reading St. Paul is
warning the Corinthians about what had happened after Israelites were released
from Egypt. The people who enjoyed and witnessed God’s mighty works, turned
their hearts astray. Due to this many were not able to reach the Promised Land.
God comes to our aid, so we also need to be faithful to Him. Mutual understanding
better the relationship. Having this in mind one may ask, when we are not
faithful does God ruin us? This question may raise in us. This is answered in
the Gospel today.
The Gospel also presents answers to
our normal questions like why so and so is affected by particular problem? Why some
people are still shown mercy by God?.... God does not punish people because so
and so is not faithful or reward people because so and so is very faithful. For
God there is no measure on which He can evaluate. When some people are
undergoing a troublesome moments, it doesn’t mean that they are put in that
situation because of their unfaithfulness. If some people are always fortunate,
it doesn’t meant that they are shown partiality by God.
God acts according to the person. Take
for instance, the people in multi religious countries. There we cannot judge
people under single umbrella. For one killing animals may be a sacrifice, for
some, the same thing may be a sin. Thus, each one needs to be understood from
their background. In this line, if we are fortunate it is not that we vouch for
whereas, it may be that God is little patient with us. He is leaving us for
some more time to see the fruit.
